When I compared:
-- Partial list of ingredients in their food: Chicken by-product meal, whole grain ground corn, wheat flour, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), brewers rice, beet pulp, egg product,

with

many of the other brands on their effected list, they all seemed to have meat...including the ONE top recommended brand by Solid Gold (affiliated with Diamond) ! So, could it be a possibility that some meat slab/instrumentations/handling within Diamond's company is spreading the salmonella? Just a side thought which I don't want to spend more time on right now..but is curious....
just thought I would point out the meat oriented coincidence...

FYI-Watch your animal bi-products! What? Dead zoo animals? Road kill?

What Exactly Are Animal By-Products?

Basically, animal by-products are what’s left of a slaughtered animal after the edible parts have been removed. They include the waste2 of meat processing not intended for human consumption. For example…
  • Feet
  • Backs
  • Livers
  • Lungs
  • Heads
  • Brains
  • Spleen
  • Frames
  • Kidneys
  • Stomachs
  • Intestines
  • Undeveloped eggs
But there are exceptions…
Giblets (livers, hearts, gizzards and necks) as well as other organs can be sold as edible meats or used generically to make hot dogs, bologna and sausage.

The Two Ways to Describe Animal By-Product Meals

Based upon the source of their raw materials, there are two ways to identify by-product meals.
  • Named by-product meals
  • Generic by-product meals

Named by-product meals have one thing in common. They all clearly
identify the source species of the by-products that was used to make the meal.
These common pet food ingredients can include…
  • Chicken by-product meal
  • Turkey by-product meal
  • Poultry by-product meal
  • Beef by-product meal
And although named by-product meals may not be considered the highest quality ingredients, they can be considered acceptable.

And the One Type You Must Never Trust-Generic by-product

On the other hand, generic by-product meals do not identify the source of the meat. Instead, they use vague and non-specific names like…
  • Meat meal
  • Meat and bone meal
  • Meat by-product meal
  • Animal by-product meal
What’s more, generic meat meals can also contain

MOM WATCH-About Salmonella
Salmonella can come from animals and taint our meat and fruits  -
Salmonella Blog -

What is it?
Salmonella is an enteric bacterium, which means that it lives in the intestinal tracts of humans and other animals, including birds. Salmonella bacteria are usually transmitted to humans by eating foods contaminated with animal feces or foods that have been handled by infected food service workers who have practiced poor personal hygiene. Contaminated foods usually look and smell normal.
Contaminated foods are often of animal origin, such as beef, poultry, milk, or eggs, but all foods, including vegetables, may become contaminated. Many raw foods of animal origin are frequently contaminated, but thorough cooking kills Salmonella.
What are the Symptoms of Salmonellosis?
Once in the lumen of the small intestine, the bacteria penetrate the epithelium, multiply, and enter the blood within 24 to 72 hours. Variables such as the health and age of the host and virulence differences among the serotypes affect the nature of the diagnosis. Infants, the elderly, individuals hospitalized, and the immune-suppressed are the populations that are the most susceptible to disease and suffer the most severe symptoms.
“The majority of persons infected with Salmonella have diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12-72 hours after exposure. The illness usually lasts 4-7 days, and the majority of persons recover without treatment.” MMWR Weekly, supra at 684. The acute symptoms of Salmonella gastroenteritis include the sudden onset of nausea, abdominal cramping, and bloody diarrhea with mucous. As already noted, there is no real cure for a Salmonella infection; treatment, therefore, tends to be palliative – although prescription of antibiotics is common, even if usually contraindicated.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 48 million foodborne illness cases occur in the United States every year.  At least 128,000 Americans are hospitalized, and 3,000 die after eating contaminated food.

Make your own food and special treats!
Making your own dog food- Google it! Here is a quick sample of what  first found!
Personally, I don't take the time to make food for my animal babes, but I will say, that in addition to regular dog foods, rice mixed with chicken juice/gravy, and a can of veggies is a special treat for them! I mean, after all, if I were a dog, I wouldn't want the same meal day after day...
"Gimme some extra love mama!"
